Why is my penis sore after anal sex?
Damian
Age: 24
I recently had anal sex with my boyfriend for the first time. Since then I have terrible pains in the end of my penis when urinating. We didn't use a condom, do you think I have injured myself or I have caught an infection?
Dr. Patrick French says
It is unlikely that this means you have injured yourself but it is more likely that you have caught an infection. I would strongly suggest going straightaway to your local sexual heath (GUM) clinic for a sexual health check up. It is almost certain that if you have an infection it would be easy to cure.
You can find a clinic address in the phone book (look under 'sexual health'), or by calling the Sexual Health Line (0800 567 123) or use our search tool in Where to get help.
Having said that having unprotected sex with your boyfriend is definitely putting you at risk of infections that are difficult to treat such as HIV and hepatitis B. When you go along to the clinic make sure you get a hepatitis A and B vaccine. It may be worthwhile your boyfriend going along with you.
You are not alone in having unprotected anal sex at the beginning of your relationship but HIV/AIDS is a reality for all gay men. The health adviser at the clinic will be able to talk to you both about safer sex and how to avoid HIV and other infections.
