If I've been successfully treated for a STI in the past, should I tell my current sexual partner?
Ali
Age: 26
I had treatment for an infection a few years ago and it hasn't come back. Do I really need to tell my new girlfriend about it?
Dr. Patrick French says
It depends on which STI you had. Some can be completely cured with antibiotics but others may reoccur or not cause symptoms. It is generally a reasonable idea to be open about your sexual history with a new partner and always practice safer sex by using a condom. If you're not sure, it's worth asking at your local GP surgery or sexual health (GUM) clinic. You can find a clinic address in the phone book (look under 'sexual health'), or by calling the Sexual Health Line (0800 567 123) or use our search tool in Where to get help.
